Steam Box, Gabecube, Valvestation, recently the web has been abuzz with the new rumor of a gaming console made by valve. From these rumors from websites such as the verge There have been numerous claims as to what it would be like. Some are saying it could possibly give game developers the ability to make games for it for free, and be the hardware part would be created by other companies. There have been minor suggestions from what Gabe Newell, head of Valve, has been saying that suggest the creation of this device. “We’d rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do [hardware].” states Gabe, suggesting that this device could be following in the path of the android operating system, in the hopes for success. The suggestion for this open source device could lead into a new era of gaming consoles, as most require game developers to pay to create for that platform, are created by one company and one company only, and have no hope of updating besides the release of a new console. Whereas with the Steam box, or whatever you would like to call it, could be the ultimate open source gaming platform, allowing developers from anywhere, and competition between companies over the best steam box. In this hypothetical situation, many believe valve would create the “backbone” or software part of it, allowing it to connect to steam and hopefully be updated more often than the xbox 360 or playstation 3. Here’s to hoping for a new, more rapidly advancing future in Game Consoles.
